Satanic Verses was banned in India in 1988 as a result of protest from some members of the Indian Muslim community, more information on the ban is available at the Univ. of Illinois at Chicago’s File Room. Since Ayatollah Khomeini’s declaration of a “fatwah” against Rushdie in 1989, he has been in hiding and his whereabouts are unknown.
